Abstract

This study describes the efforts of the French to prevent anglicisation of French. After a brief historical excursus mapping the efforts of various organizations and individuals to protect French against foreign influences (historically Latin, then English), special attention is paid to the current situation. The study also aims to answer the question whether, in the early 21st century, France continues imposing penalties for the use of non-French expressions (e.g. in advertising and public speeches), and coining new French words to replace their English equivalents which have penetrated into French.
