Abstract in different language: | Is there any kind of justification for a belief that the future will be largely like the past? In the eighteenth century David Hume formulated the problem of induction in a similar spirit, and his version is now conventional. Even two hun- dred and fifty years after Hume’s death, the ef- fort to justify inductive inferences still preoccupies philosophers. Sir Karl Popper believed that he had successfully solved this fundamental philosophical problem. The present article introduces the prob- lematic situation formulated by David Hume, fol- lowed by Popper’s original solution to the problem. Along with that, relevant criticism from JohnWor- rall and Wes Salmon will be presented. It concen- trates on Popper’s rejection of induction and the related inability to implement any prediction about the future within critical rationalism. The validity or failure of Popper’s solution is discussed towards the end of the article, together with a reconsider- ation of the current state of the debate. The last part of the study is devoted to the author’s pro- posal, which should be able to stand up against anti-Popperian objections while remaining within the boundaries of critical-rationalist methodology. |
