The establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was followed by the realization of Germany’s plans to include this area in the German territory. However, the German occupation administration was neither unified in the procedures nor the aims of this intention. On the one hand, there was an attempt at total germanization of the Czech territory. On the other hand, a much more pragmatic approach consisted in the effective use of the Czech production potential without the necessity of strict germanization of the Czech population. In view of the ongoing war and the needs of the wartime industry, the practical approach prevailed. The German propaganda kept convincing the Czechs of the advantages of their inclusion in the ‘new and fairer world’ as well as of the need of the Czech aid in building the ‘new European order.’ This propaganda was of paramount importance especially in schools, aiming at creating an impression of alliance and friendship with Germany among Czech children. The attitudes of Czech teachers towards these propagandist efforts varied. Like in other spheres of Czech society, there were worthy individuals as well as collaborationists. However, most teachers regarded their mission as a national task, using their attitudes to acquaint the students with their relationship to the new circumstances in the country.
