Abstract: Everyday life of all peoples of the Near East was influenced by religion. We have abundant evidence of persons connected with the cult and thereby gaining great influence not only socially, but also in the political way of life. The position of high-priest was one of these. This article deals with this position in ancient Israel and Mesopotamia through the years.
