Abstract: The present paper focuses on the interpretation of the term daotong (meaning genealogy or transmission of the Way), which formulates the basic outlines of the understanding of both history and ideological tradition of daoxue movement of Confucianism. The effort of daoxue scholars both in China and Korea to clearly delimit the succession of the orthodox Confucian tradition resulted in the belief that in many cases and historical periods the transmission simply disappeared and Confucian school was virtually nonexistent. The reasons why whole centuries of Confucian tradition were excluded from the orthodox interpretation of history, accepted by Chinese and Korean schools of daoxue, are analyzed on textual samples dealing with this issue written by Korean scholar Yulgok Yi I. His answers reveal the basic stance of orthodox scholars towards their predecessors and their criteria for defining the true transmission of Confucian tradition.
