Abstract in different language: The prior-austenite grain size significantly influences the refinement of the martensitic microstructure and therefore the mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties of a material. The accurate determination of the prioraustenite grain size is therefore very important and is a principal task of metallography. There are different metallographic techniques for determining the prior-austenite grain size which can be separated into two steps: (1) revealing the austenite grain boundaries and (2) measuring their size. The experiment described here focuses on determining the prior-austenite grain size in the martensitic microstructure of high strength steel. Samples of this steel were quenched from various temperatures to obtain different sizes of prior-austenite grains. Different techniques were implemented to reveal the austenite grain boundaries to enable the measurement of the grain size and to get the best results. The size of the prior-austenite grain was then determined and the hardness measured. The dependencies between the heat treatment sequence, microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties were established.
