dc.description.abstract-translatedSmall and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the driving force of the economy in the European Union (EU), providing the majority of jobs and accounting for more than half of value added among all businesses. Support from national and European institutions in the field of research and development is essential for the proper functioning of these organisations. This support must be allocated effectively through financial and non-financial resources. First of all, however, it is necessary to find out what the current situation is and, on the basis of the discussion, to assess future developments. The aim of this paper is to analyse the development of innovation activities of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Czech Republic (CR) and the EU. The research is based on a literature search of sources that contain facts and recommendations in the framework of innovation to improve the competitiveness of organizations in the local and global market. Trends in innovation and sustainability have changed over the years and therefore there is a need to address this topic. Currently, innovation activities that are linked to sustainability are very much used. Therefore, it is necessary to find out how these activities are used by SMEs and what are the impacts on their competitiveness. In this paper, innovation activities and factors that affect the growth of organizations are mapped. The evaluation of the analysis is described on an individual country basis, including an assessment of individual best and worst innovation factors. Finally, the strategic innovation plan for the Czech Republic in 2021-2027 is mentioned, and the results are also presented in the context of the current economic situation in the EU (energy price increases including the harmonized consumer price index).en
