| Abstract: | Předkládaná disertační práce pojednává o britském vlivu v údolí řeky Gambie v průběhu první poloviny 19. století. Vysvětluje příčiny příchodu Britů a rozebírá klíčové události dějin zkoumaného období. Práce klade důraz na důležité fenomény formující danou oblast, např. obchod s otroky a jeho zákaz, legitimní obchod, obchod s arašídy, francouzsko-britské soupeření, rozšiřování britské sféry vlivu, boje s místními etniky a mnoho dalších. |
| Abstract in different language: | This dissertation deals with the British influence along the Gambia River in the first half of the 19th century. It is explained why the British came here along with the examination of the key factors for that period. The work puts great emphasis on phenomena related with the region like slave trade and its abolishment, legitimate trade, groundnut trade, French-British rivalry, extension of the British sphere of influence, scrimmages with local natives and many others. |
